Spring has almost sprung. The weather is warming up, the sun is shining (for the most part) and it’s (here’s that word again) almost time to start sprucing up your wardrobe for the season. Between browsing WGSN, the worlds leading trend authority, and a recent trip to the Atlanta Apparel Market, I’ve had a little glimpse of what’s to come for Spring 2016. And I want to share it with you, Southwest Missouri darlings.
From color trends to accessories, here are your spring 2016 wardrobe essentials that will keep you up on your fashion game. Enjoy!
Colors To Keep In Mind
Color: Cosmetic Blush.
Color: Antique Whites.
Color: Laundered Khaki and Military Green.
Color: Baked Clay.
Obviously these aren’t the only colors you’ll find in your favorite stores but they’re definitely being pulled from the runway and applied directly to this season’s main trends. Let’s talk about what those main trends are and what details will help you achieve those looks, shall we?
Key Themes You Should Watch For
Theme: Native American influence
Native American influences are highlighted as a key trend clear across the board on the catwalks. It’s being pushed for festivals in the summer but so many retailers are already gravitating towards these trends… Feather trims, beadings applied to necklace pendants, brown suede and so much fringe.
Details: Statement Fringe.
Statement fringe has been a constant for the past few seasons. Now we see fringe everywhere. On sleeves and bags and shoes and jewelry… We can’t escape it. From leather details to frayed yarns, fringe adds texture and interest to a range of different garments. 1970’s influences are still very apparent, propelling the theme with camel and tan colors seen as a key color trend for the season.
From keychains to zipper pulls, oversized designs in leather and suede offer a variation of the statement fringe. Opt for a bold and bright color or a more neutral tone for an understated statement.
Lace-up details have come up fast over the past year and aren’t slowing down. They’re on body suits and tunics and dresses alike. They were initially adopted by the youth market and are now being embraced by all markets. Opt for oversized fits and chunky stitches for a more relaxed and less Pirates of the Caribbean vibe.
Theme: The New 70’s
Details: Tie Dye.
It’s back and it’s dominating the sales floor. This trend is going to be seen primarily in darker shades of indigoes, blues and blacks to create a fresh modern feel. You’ll see this applied to bags, shirts and dresses and a heavy application of swim and beach wear.
Details: Denim on Denim.
Denim has always and will always be a key item in trends. Jean silhouettes remain centered around the slim-leg skinny, with flared and boyfriend-styles continuing to drive the trend portion of the mix. With a strong 70’s influence, denim on denim makes a comeback with a modern take on the trend.
Details: Button Down Skirt
Last season’s button down skirt takes a slight drop to the knee with midi lengths, providing an update and expanding its reach to include older markets. Denim is the fabric of choice, tying in with the nautical themes and the high waists and suede fabrications nod towards the 1970s influences.
Theme: Endless Romantic.
Utility and military details remain an important theme this season with the upcoming election. So many retailers are pushing a more refined approach to military dressing, working in the minimalist elements from previous seasons. From trench coats, tailored cargo pants and the shirt-dress, clean lines and minimal bulk offer a smarter direction for utility.
Details: Shirt Dress
Spanning from the utility look, and taking on several different fabrications… From denim to khaki, the shirt-dress remains a constant piece throughout the past several seasons. It’s casual, refined and continues the minimalist look that has been driving trends for the past couple years.
Details: Tailored Cargos
The skinny jean takes on pockets, and lots of them. Still leaning towards the utility look, cargo pants take on a more refined approach and are super flattering for all body types.
Your Odds and Ends
Sometimes there are things that come into the forefront of the market and you don’t really know why or where they originated from. But that’s where these trends fit in, my little miscellaneous section.
Styles vary from hand-held to shoulder and is being carried over from previous seasons, proving its popularity as a fashion item that should be in your wardrobe or more specifically, on your shoulder.
Metal cuff bracelets offer a minimalistic yet edgy choice for jewelry. Open cuffs are being seen worn on the wrist and even on the upper arm for a more bohemian look.
This trend will go from cut out shoulders to completely bare shoulders during the summer and will eventually move to inward slits towards the collarbone for a new direction next autumn. This acts as both a design detail and a key item
Details: Asymmetric Hem
Paneled and staggered hemlines are coming into the mix quickly. Asymmetric hemlines have proven their popularity all over the globe. Lengths vary from just above to below the knee. Heavy cottons play into the structural feel while smooth leathers work well for younger markets.
