We recently had the opportunity to sit down with our sponsors, Dr. James Peterson, or “Dr. James,” his wife Jessica and their three adorable daughters. Dr. James is the chiropractor, specializing in pediatrics, at Breath of Life Wellness Center.
We walked into the office and immediately felt at ease. While the office was kept neat and tidy, it was clear that kids are welcome at Breath of Life! The girls were busy playing next to a bookshelf that was fully stocked and ready for kids to settle in and make themselves right at home. Now, I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to worry about when sitting in a waiting room is if my kids are going to behave. Dr. James has you covered here!
It was clear from our conversation, Dr. James cares about the health of SWMO–in particular mommas and our babies (of all ages!).
1.) Describe your typical day:
Day to day life as a pediatric chiropractor can be very spontaneous! It has to be when working with kids! I provide care for families as well, so I get to care for adults too. My typical day is spent caring for folks of all ages. One visit I can be checking an infant with reflux or ear aches, a child with ADHD, autism or sensory processing disorder, a “well child” check-up or a pregnant mom. While my next visit may be a patient with varying concerns of digestive issues to muscle tension to pain.
2.) How long have you been a chiropractor? Nearly three years.
3.) How long have you lived in SWMO? 3 1/2 years.
Honestly, it is never too soon! Pregnant mothers should be checked regularly throughout their pregnancy to ensure proper function of their nervous system and proper alignment of the spine and pelvis. This will ensure the best opportunity for a healthy pregnancy for both mom and baby. Regular chiropractic check-ups also assist in smooth labor and delivery.
Mom and baby should be checked again after delivery. Mom needs to be checked for possible pelvic misalignments to help with a full and quick recovery. Baby should also be checked to ensure the nervous system is functioning to allow proper growth and developmental milestones are achieved. Especially, if mom had a prolonged labor or if there were interventions such as vacuum, forceps or c-section. This all causes a stress response within the nervous system, which potentially will lead to sickness.
5.) Do you specialize in any type of chiropractic care?
Yes, I have advanced training in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care with a special emphasis on neuro-developmental disorders such as autism, ADHD, sensory process disorder and anxiety. I am also trained to care for ear infections and asthmas in addition to “well child” check-ups.
6.) Do you accept insurance? We accept private pay.
7.) Describe the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is multifactorial. It is rewarding to witness the improvements in our patients. For example, a child with ADHD, a child who was kicked out of daycare or struggling in school or can’t sit long enough to get a haircut and now can do all of those things after a series of chiropractic adjustments. Not only was the child’s life changed forever, but the improvements have dramatically lessened the parents stress, which decreases the overall stress of the family. By changing the life of a child, the family can be changed forever, thus affecting the community and the world. It’s really all about families!
8.) Just for fun, tell us about your daughters and the last thing they did to make you laugh. Our girls are little fireballs and are full of life! We have three little girls–ages 6, 4 and 18 months. They love music and dance as well as anything princess! A good tickle fight is in order at least once a week! Everyone piles on the bed and laughs and laughs! For some reason, I (Dr. James) always win! =) They love to do secret acts of service for my wife and I. Our sweet little angels always make us smile with their curiosity for life and willingness to do what’s right.
