Sunday Devotion: Glory

June 10, 2018 By: admin

by Jennifer Duncan

I love to see photos of beautiful sunsets and the sky alight with sunbeams piercing the clouds.  I suppose God gives these beautiful displays all over the world, since He does love everyone!  But it seems they are particularly gorgeous in the Ozarks, and I am grateful for opportunities to witness, when “the heavens declare His glory” (Psalm 19:1)

Sometimes I even try to take my own photo, but it seems that by the time I go to get the camera, some of the splendor has faded…or a tree limb is in the way…or something.  The glory of God, displayed in the heavens, seems to be a thing for me to just enjoy in the moment…not to capture and put on social media.

I had one of those moments a few weeks ago, driving to a meeting at sunset.  I was startled by the intensity.  The clouds were dark, threatening a downpour, but right in the center of them was a large circle of light so bright I could not look at it directly for more than a few seconds.  I slowed the car to look, and yet, I could not fully look at all!  I thought it must be the inexpressible, perfect light of God Himself peeking…just barely peeking…through.  Yet, even the tiny peek was more than the human eye could look upon!

I was reminded of a “Dennis the Menace” cartoon I saw recently.  Dennis and his friend are looking at a magnificent sky, and Dennis remarks, “If heaven is that pretty on the bottom, think how it must look on the top!”  How true, Dennis…how true.  If we are blinded by the small shafts of heaven’s light that we can see from this side, what glory there must be on the other side!

I read a quote once that said, “If we knew as much about heaven as God does, we would clap our hands every time a Christian dies.” (George MacDonald).

We cannot imagine the unimaginable, since God reserves some surprises to reveal in His own timing.  But we can be assured that those who die loving Him, will experience glory beyond imagining, love beyond human reasoning, and peace that “passes all understanding” (Philippians 4:7).   So let the little peeks at heaven, teasing us through the dark clouds of life, be reassurance and hope…that glory beyond our comprehension awaits us on the other side.

Sunday Devotion: Be present. Live for today!

This is the day the lord has madeBy: Kelli Artherton

Psalm 118:24, ESV “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Often times as we go through life we are thinking about the future. The “what ifs,” future trips and plans. Have you really thought about this? If we are constantly dreaming of the future, we are missing out on much of what life has to offer right now. We are missing what God has planned for us today. We may even be missing a message from Him that will help us to live out HIS purpose for us.

I find myself doing this quite often. I am always planning for the future. Being a mother of two awesome little girls has made me take a step back and savor each moment with them. We truly do not know when our last moments on earth will be. If we are constantly looking toward the next big thing, we miss out on so much!

The Bible constantly talks about being content. We are called to live in the moment and to be still and listen to God’s voice. Recently, I caught myself making plans for the future. I was looking at homes and where I wanted to move next. I was making new plans to save to build a home with some land. While I was lost in thought, my aunt Janease sent me an email with a devotion (She is great at encouraging me and helping me keep my focus).  She sends me devotions quite frequently and I love it! This particular one came at just the right time. It was titled: Love the Home You Have. I 9aeb8a0aa24dd011efcf5be0adc57bd7thought, wow is she reading my mind today? The devotion talks about how she was doing her mundane housework and started to notice all that needed fixed or completed in her home. As I read on, I realize there’s nothing wrong with daydreaming now and again, but don’t get caught up with “keeping up with the Jones'” and continually wondering if the grass is greener on the other side.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am completely grateful and truly blessed with everything in my life! I honestly wouldn’t change one aspect of it. I am sure all of us are in the same boat, but I encourage you to take a step back and appreciate what is right in front of us! We don’t want to miss out on the everyday blessings in our lives by looking toward the future blessings.

Hebrews 13:5, ESV “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Dear Lord, please help to focus on the right now. To hear and see your blessings right in front of  me. I don’t want to miss out on what you have so graciously provided for me. Help me to refocus my heart and eyes on you and to learn to live in the present. In Jesus Name, Amen.

The future still awaits you. Let’s live for today!

Sunday Devotion: I see you and I thank you

May 27, 2018 By: admin

By Kelli Artherton

I see you standing there in your uniform so proud, so courageous. What an honor you must feel to serve our country. Such a true sacrifice that you chose, so we could have freedom.

I want to personally say thank you. I see you and I thank you. I thank your family for their sleepless nights. I thank your children for their endless tears. I thank your parents for their worried hearts. Without them their wouldn’t be you and without you their wouldn’t be our freedom.

I see you and I thank you. I see you and I pray for you. I pray for your families that they be comforted at night, knowing you are fighting for their freedom. I pray for your children’s tears to be happy tears of how proud they are of you. I pray for your parents to be honored to have raised you. But most of all I pray for your safety. I pray you hear God’s words of wisdom. I pray you know how special you are, how wonderful you are.

Do you know how special you are? I do, and I thank you and pray for you everyday!

Thank you to ALL the men and women who have fought for our freedom, who gave us the life we know today! May God truly bless you and your families.

Joshua 1:9  “Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Sunday Devotion: Remembering

May 20, 2018 By: admin

by Jennifer Duncan

When Memorial Day draws near, I feel a rush of sentiment that pulls me to cemeteries.  I remember visiting cemeteries with my parents and hearing the stories…about the young cousin who was killed in a car accident, about my great grandfather who died trying to protect his grandchildren in a tornado, about those who served in war time.  I associated the cemeteries with family pride and loyalty, with character qualities I wanted to emulate.  I associated the cemeteries with love and faith.

When I was a little girl, Memorial Day was a really big deal.  Granted, one of the reasons for this for our family, was that my granddad owned the monument sales business in my parents’ hometown, and he had sandblasted, polished and sold most of the monuments in the cemetery.  Memorial Day was a huge “deadline” day for him, and also a “P.R.” opportunity.  But aside from that, the holiday was a more treasured community event for everybody back then, than it is today.

Part of the reason the day is not the community social event it used to be, is the introduction of the “Monday holiday.”  No one seems to know exactly which day surrounding May 31st is truly THE day when we are all going to the cemeteries.  Too much flexibility about when to celebrate has diluted the whole experience!

Today, to most young adults, Memorial Day just marks the beginning of summer, with an extra day off work and a nice barbecue with the family.  It’s just the day the swimming pools open!  Though the day has retained some of its patriotic significance, and this has even spiked a bit in recent years, it seems that very few families are continuing the practice of decorating the graves of loved ones.

I would suggest that this is an emphasis worth intentionally preserving.  Setting aside time on, or around, that day is an opportunity to teach children to honor their ancestry.  It’s a time when we can tell the children stories of family history, the character qualities of ancestors…some that we want to treasure as positive examples, and some that we want to avoid!

We can teach children that they are part of a family legacy, or the builders of a new legacy, and help give them a sense of pride in who they are.  We can also teach children pride in being Americans, and remind them of the privileges and freedoms for which many in these cemeteries died.

I would urge you to teach your children the value of remembering, and being grateful, by taking them to the cemetery on Memorial Day…or at least taking them on a verbal journey, honoring those who are part of their heritage.  Teach them that our hearts are tied, firmly and lovingly, to those who have gone before.

“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.  Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” Deuteronomy 4:9
