Name: Mallory Fitzpatrick
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Southwest Missouri? I am from Lee’s Summit, Missouri and moved to SW MO about four years ago.
Kid’s names and ages: Luke & Carson are 21 months old
Twin boys! How do you do it? We stay busy, that’s for sure! Just like anything else, I prioritize what matters and try to be flexible if our day doesn’t go as planned. Honestly, I’m not sure what kept me busy before I had kids!
Describe your typical day. I’m a working mom which at times can be challenging but I also have the flexibility of occasionally working from home. Our typical day includes play time in the morning an early afternoon nap and usually some type of physical, occupational or speech therapy in the afternoons. I play with the boys after work for an hour or so before it’s time to cook dinner in the evenings. We love to end our day with a walk around the neighborhood if the weather is nice and then usually start our bedtime routine around 7:45 pm. We are lucky that both boys value their sleep (just like mom!) so bed time is usually peaceful in our house.
What do you do when both babies are crying at the same time? Scott would tell you at the beginning, when we first brought them home from the hospital and he was gone in the evenings, I would cry with them (which may or may not be true!). But now, I am able to determine who needs consoling first and give them my attention. It is rare these days that they have breakdowns at the same time. Usually, if brother is hurt or sick, the healthy one is on his best behavior.
If you could have an entire day to yourself, how would you spend it? Oh boy, in my dream world I would read a book, get a massage & grab lunch with friends. Maybe even work in a nap!
What is the most enjoyable thing about being a mother of twins? I just love seeing their personalities grow. Our boys are opposites in a lot of ways, so it’s fun to see their personalities differ even though they are identical twins.
What is the most challenging part of being a mother of twins? For me, the most challenging part was our time in the hospital. Carson got discharged after 3 months and Luke after 4 months. It was bittersweet to take Carson home and leave Luke behind. Then we had a month of juggling a newborn at Children’s Mercy and one at my parent’s house in Lee’s Summit which was difficult.
Any advice you could offer to a momma that is expecting twins? I don’t have any ground-breaking advice. I would say don’t buy two of everything. We got one swing, one activity mat and one bouncer and rotated the boys. It worked out well for everyone because the boys had a variety of activities and our house wasn’t over crowded with newborn things.
How do you relax at the end of the day? Some days I am able to relax with a bath after the boys go to bed. Most days Scott and I watch a show to unwind.
What’s something your friends might not know about you? I love to cook!
One word to sum me up: Tenacious
